by Brian Wood & Rob G
original graphic novels
the premise: Moustafa and Special are couriers - urban mercenaries - who straddle the lines of bad and badder in the underworld in fast-paced adventures.
the lowdown: Everything about these books screams "MOVIE!" They're even set up like movies with extended prologues. And manoman would these be great movies.
The Couriers books are in the flavor of Wood's futuristic techno (see Supermarket), but they're also solid crime stories, and they're also thrillers. All three books feature tons of balls-to-the-wall action (and I promise never to use the phrase "balls-to-the-wall" again, but forgive me this one indulgence), with cool, larger than life characters. The third book is actually the best of the lot IMO, and is a prequel to the first two. This is a concept that could spawn OGNs indefinitely - great action movies on paper.
That's due in no small part to Rob G, who provides excellent, kinetic art (and was nice enough to do a free sketch on my vol. 1 awhile back). Rob's art simulates movement very well, and adds to the breakneck pace. These books look as good as they read.
the verdict: Hated them.
Well- no. I LOVED them, all three of them but especially the third one. Can't recommend these highly enough.
