lobo/ authority: holiday hell

by Keith Giffen, Alan Grant, Simon Bisley and more

collects various Lobo and Authority holiday one-shots

the premise:  Lobo is forced to spend Christmas with his alcoholic uncle, and mayhem ensues when... oh wait.  That's not fiction.  Anyway - Lobo tries to kill Santa Claus and fights the Authority in separate stories.

the lowdown:  These stories aren't exactly... uh... intelligent... or insightful.... or at times coherent.  But "coherence" is just an artsy froo-froo concept anyway.  These stories ARE hyperviolent, cynical, irreverent, slightly mean at times, and quite witty.  The Lobo one-shot that leads off the book is the highlight, as Lobo is contracted by the Easter Bunny to snuff out Kris Kringle, leading to a postal-style assault on the North Pole.

The remaining stories feature Lobo and the Authority squaring off, as young Jenny Quantum reads the first story and decides Lobo must pay.  All the stories are completely over-the-top and absurd, but in an enjoyable way.  The Authority stories don't really live up to the pue genius of the Lobo/ Santa battle, but they're fun enough.

Bisley does most of the art, and you probably know what to expect from him.  His sequential storytelling isn't the greatest, but he excels at drawing exaggerated people with lots of muscles and huge weapons.

the verdict:  If you're tired of hearing Clay Aiken sing Christmas Carols, as I suspect one or two people might be, this could be the book for you.  Recommended for those who want a biting perspective on the holidays.
